Accepting and Affirming Diversity
The right of any patient to self autonomy and effective health care is a fundamental tenement of Australia's medical system and the relevant Health Service providers.
In order to provide effective health care to individuals who experience MAPS, health care providers are encouraged to adopt the following Ethics Statement and procedures, so they may provide effective health services to their patients in a human and dignified manner that respects patient autonomy.
1) respect for the inherent dignity and identity of the patient.
2) the individuals right to participate in health decisions relevant to their health and well-being.
3) establishing informed consent for Sex Affirmation Procedures .
4) a commitment to ongoing training and awareness of developments in the treatment of MAP's Syndrome.
5) recognition of the physical nature of the condition known as MAP's Syndrome.
HBSS is opposed to the pathologising of sex and gender as the determinant of a persons identity.
We support an approach based on treating the physical ailments that form the syndrome.
